Mortgage insurance is also known as Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI).

Mortgage insurance is required by mortgage lenders if the borrower is

making a down payment that is less than 20% of the purchase price. This

can add a few hundred dollars each year to a borrower's loan cost. The

insurance is typically not requred when a borrower's equity in the home

(the difference between loan value and current market value) reaches
